Kid’s Art Club engages children with poetry, writing, music, materials, and play to explore a theme and complete an art project. In addition iPads and GoPro devices are presented as artistic tools and used to develop screen media skills (digital photography, time-lapse video...). Children are given an "art experience" by focusing on the process of making, rather than the result. Each two-hour workshop is taught by artist Janice Marin and includes art materials.
“Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.”
— John Dewey, Art as Experience
AS A MOTHER AND ARTIST,
I am always searching for ways to give my children outlets for creative expression. Kid’s Art Club began on the kitchen table with informal children's art projects. Seeing my two children and their friends’ happiness while they engaged in making crafts, inspired me to write workshops for kids. While in graduate school I hosted an artist retreat project based on a re-creation of the Surrealist Dinner Salons, with artist talks and workshops. My passion for research, learning, and connecting with others founded my company The Carbon Table, LLC which fulfills this desire through a dedication to creating immersive workshops, and in 2018 I opened Marin Gallery.
Kid’s Art Club used take place in my basement art studio which was located in the window filled, lower-level of my home. Kid’s Art Club now takes place in Marin Gallery, located at 615 Sycamore St. in Waterloo, Iowa.
